“London Games”, my novel set in the spring and summer of 2012, is now on sale at Amazon.
It concerns an Afghanistan veteran suffering from combat stress, a disgraced ex-banker sent to jail amidst scandal and public outrage, a cocaine dealer with customers at the very top and the very bottom of society, a property developer on the cusp of making his fortune and a restauranteur starting to make his name as a celebrity chef. The story culminates as the games open at the Olympic stadium.

As much as I find myself agreeing with you politically Peter, I’ll wait to see some reviews or something first. I’ll admit that dramas and relationship stuff isn’t my preferred genre, but the blurb didn’t really grip me. I do very much appreciate it being on a Kindle though.

Read it in roughly one sitting around dinner. Not bad. Having read your blog a while, I can certainly see your influences at play. Did you work in the library whilst at Brixton Prison?
There was a spelling mistake early on (feinting at the sight of blood), but other than that it read nicely. A little fantastical, and certainly pretty light drama, but nice anyway. I enjoyed it, and the entertainment was worth the price. It was about the right length for what it was too.
It’d be nice to see a novel from you that spends less time juggling a whole bunch of characters and focuses more on the story arc than the characters interactions. That’s mostly personal preference anyway.

The London Games
The games in London make me sick;
They’re played by “Call me Dave”. The prick
Still pushes out the tabloid crap:
Embarrassed colleagues fear mishap
When he is challenged by the man
Who’s taken on the job that can
Work up the issue in the news
And end the prohibition blues.
“Please call me, Dave” says Mr R
“I’d like to talk about how far
The world has gone in seeing sense
As sanity breaks through the fence.
But still you play that game we knew
When, lost and scared, without a clue
We knelt, and shook, and clasped our hands
And buried our heads in the sand.”
Monopoly’s a London game
Don’t Dave’s rich friends enjoy a claim?
They want their slice of pie and more –
The key to ev’ry fucking door.
The ones without, they’ll kick right down
Around the country ev’ry town
Where some poor bastard grows his weed –
Alternative to pharma greed.
Another one’s Duplicity
(It might involve Complicity…)
It’s where the player tries to hide
An inconvenient truth inside
A lie so big it makes you wince.
Who is he hoping to convince?
The evidence is all around –
Why is he digging in the ground?
I feel he favours good old Scrabble –
Played at Eton, not by rabble.
Mix those letters into words
Twist the meanings, more absurd!
Turn a saint into a sinner
Double word score – there’s a winner!
ILLEGAL’s made from LIE and GALL
With words like those he’ll fool ’em all!
This world’s a gamer’s Neverland
Pick up your cards, don’t show your hand
The game you play could be illicit –
Will the peelers pay a visit?
Decent folks all tell you Dave
Get off our backs – we’re not your slave
It’s people’s lives, not games of Ludo
BUT YOU JUST HAVEN’T GOT A CLUE-DO!
