“New LCA” – Call For Nominations

with 75 comments

“New LCA” is in the process of drafting its constitution and revising its aims and principles in accordance with the results of the leadership election.  The immediate plans following the election are set out here.

The management committee is considering a new name which will better reflect the aims of the party.   Nominations are invited from everyone.

This is not a competition and there are no prizes, guarantees or rewards.  We are looking for suggestions and ideas.  The committee will decide the name that it will recommend to the membership as part of the new constitution.

The main consideration is how to advance our cause, ending the prohibition of cannabis, and who we have to communicate with and persuade in order to achieve that.   That means looking outwards at people who do not use cannabis and particularly at MPs, opinion formers and the media.  These are the people we must influence.

We need a name and identity around which we can rally supporters but we are not the main concern.   For instance, “legalise” is a word that frightens people.  Our target audience thinks that it means a free for all, whereas our intention is a system of regulation based on facts and evidence which protects children and the vulnerable and maintains quality and safety standards.

“Cannabis” is a word that people are concerned about having linked to their online and Facebook profiles but it is the essence of our cause.  It is difficult to see how any name could be successful without including the word.   Our new campaign theme is “Reform Regulate Realise” but it needs a payoff to say clearly what it is about.

Please think about how the name will sound when you write to your MP .   Will it be an immediate turn off or will it invite interest?   When Jeremy Paxman talks about us on Newsnight will it be with a sneer or with some respect, that here is a serious party with a serious proposition?

Please post your ideas here as comments.  I promise that every suggestion will be considered.  Here are some ideas to start off with.

Ian Tomlinson’s Death Puts the Final Nail In the Coffin Of British Justice

The Man Who Destroyed Justice

Keir Starmer’s decision not to prosecute PC Simon Harwood, who clearly assaulted Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protest, while concealing his identity, is an outrageous scandal.  It is perhaps the most shameful episode ever in the history of British justice, a system which has long held a much higher opinion of itself than it ever deserved.  Today it is proved to be utterly useless and Starmer’s conduct proves him to be both incompetent and entirely unsuitable for his responsibility.

Starmer’s weasel words in his statement are truly pathetic and demonstrate weakness, a complete inability to see beyond legalese to the truth and are a clarion call for his dismissal.

We the people of Great Britain care not one jot for the disagreement between medical experts.  We want this matter put before a jury.

We want PC Simon Harwood’s head.  He is a murderer.

We want Keir Starmer’s head.  He is an apologist for police brutality and an incompetent Director of Public Prosecutions.

Why Are Withheld Numbers Allowed?

with one comment

It's Me!

Recently I started to receive a series of silent telephone calls.  Sometimes the caller would ring off as soon as I answered.  On other occasions  it would be some time before my line cleared.  It’s happened to me before as it has to most of us.  What makes me angry though is when you dial 1471 and find out that the caller was from a withheld number.

At one time I’d have assumed – no, correction – I’d have known that it was a deranged ex-girlfriend but not any more.  I’ve cleared all that sort of dross out of my life.  Now it could be one of those dreadful automated telemarketing computers which all sorts of otherwise reputable companies seem to think are an acceptable business tool.  I don’t.  I think they’re pretty much akin to an offensive weapon.

But why, oh why are withheld numbers allowed at all?

What possible reason or excuse can there be for allowing anyone to make anonymous telephone calls?  We have the technology.  Caller ID is now virtually universal.  What possible justification can there be for anyone to hide the number they’re calling from?  If they’re initiating the communication,  whoever they are, why should they be able to hide their identity?

So I thought I’d take advantage of BT’s “Anonymous Caller Rejection” service.  Now, I’m probably going to have to cancel it because so many people are having difficulty getting through to me.

First it was my electricity supplier.  Then it was a government department that I was doing some writing for.  Then it was my MP’s secretary who comes from the doctors’ receptionists charm school and was quite affronted, told me off even, that my phone won’t accept anonymous calls.

Sorry, Wrong Number!

Just what is it that makes these (mostly) rational people and organisations think it is acceptable to contact me anonymously?  Would they send me anonymous letters or emails or arrive at my door and refuse to identify themselves?

No, of course they wouldn’t.  It would be entirely wrong and it is entirely wrong to use anonymous or withheld telephone numbers too.

Generally I’m opposed to laws.  We have far too many already but in this instance we should legislate.  It’s ridiculous, deceptive, dishonest and unnecessary yet many of our biggest organisations and institutions do it as matter of course.

It’s unacceptable and it should be stopped.  Ban withheld numbers now!

Stop Police!

We have now reached the tipping point.  Enough is enough.  The disgraceful oppression at the Gaza demonstration in Kensington, Ian Tomlinson’s death, the six-foot plus thug who beats five-foot minus women, the deliberate disguise of identity, the arrogant invasion of the mother of parliaments, the Stasi-like investigation of Damian Green extending to Shami Chakrabati.  Stop Police!

I respect the challenge and difficulty of the job you do and the vital necessity of your role.  There will always be more good policemen than bad but, yet again, you are losing our trust.  Now is the time to stop, sort out the bad apples and start afresh before the problem becomes systemic.  There is a failure of command and leadership as well so I expect some policemen to go to prison, some policemen to be sacked, some required to resign and some to be disciplined.
