Bigotry, Prejudice, Hatred And Prohibitionists Come In Many Disguises

with 39 comments

Ask yourself, why would anyone go to such lengths to discredit me?

Why, at a time when the cannabis campaign is enjoying more success than ever with thousands of people joining together as never before, why do a few individuals go to such extraordinary lengths to smear my reputation.?

Out of 477 articles on my personal website, written over a period of three and a half years, two articles have been held up and misrepresented in the most despicable and dishonest way to accuse me of being a racist and a homophobe.  Laughably I’ve also been accused of being a member of the EDL, attending an EDL demonstration in Weymouth and of selling Nazi memorabilia on a Swansea market stall!  These are lies and nonsense.

Of course, in a civilised, adult world what people do in response to articles they disagree with is post comments and discuss – and some of those discussions become pretty heated.  I’ve been accused of being anti-Muslim, anti-Jewish and for and against just about every issue you care to mention.   My writing was intended to be provocative and controversial.  Cannabis was only one of the subjects that I covered on my website and when I was elected leader of CLEAR I wrote:

My thoughts here will be few and far between now. My focus is on CLEAR and I am learning to moderate my opinion because I have chosen a single issue. If  I strike out in a particular direction I divert my own and others’ energy from the cause.

The accusations of racisim and homophobia are entirely false.  I could present a host of evidence to prove my “innocence” but the trolls and liars twist everything.  My oldest and best friend IS a Jamaican.  If Terry got his hands on some of the individuals that have been making foul slurs against me, they would not enjoy Jamaican justice.  Two examples though – I used to live on a road called The Chase, just off Clapham Common.  When the Gay Pride event was held there in, I think it was 95 or 96, I was a steward.  When more recently I lived in Notting Hill and all my friends and neighbours were black, they used to call me a “wigga”, a “propa black white man”.

So, I say again, ask  yourself why would anyone go to such lengths to discredit me at a time when under my leadership, CLEAR is achieving so much success?  Why would they set up websites, multiple Facebook pages and groups and engage in hours and hours of trolling, abuse and misrepresentation?

I’ll tell you why.  It’s because the individuals behind this are big time growers and dealers who rely on prohibition to maintain the ludicrously high price of cannabis and fill their own greedy pockets.

They pretend to be pro-cannabis because they seek to subvert, disrupt and undermine the cannabis campaign.  They’ve been doing it for years.

Many believe that the main protagonist has an even more sinister role because he appears to be teflon coated when it comes to the criminal justice system.  For all the times he has been arrested and charged, he has always walked away while others round him have been sent to prison.

He claims not to live in Britain anymore but the man is a liar and a fraud.  He lives off his past reputation when he claims to have been growing and providing cannabis to medicinal users free of charge (a good cover story!).  This is false.  I have several emails from people who he used to supply who tell me that he used to charge them £5.00 per gram plus, believe it or not, next day delivery and packaging charges. At the time that price was top whack if not more.

It is extraordinary that over many years, every single time there has been disruption and conflict in the cannabis community he has been there, goading, provoking and fermenting divisiveness.  Back in 2010 , when I managed to get MPs, members of the House of Lords and even the government’s chief drugs advisor to sign up to the BMCR medicinal cannabis initiative, he waded straight in and did all he could to destroy it by snide insinuation, bickering and negativity.

The man is a charlatan.  Why would anyone go to such extraordinary efforts and lengths to disrupt the CLEAR campaign?  Now you know.  Grass is an old term for weed but perhaps one that is most appropriate in this case.

Tribalism Is the Enemy Of Reform

Some of the more gullible members of the cannabis community have been taken in by these attacks against me but I am greatly encouraged that by far the majority have not.  The messages, emails and comments supporting me have far outweighed those against.  Thank you to all.  I WILL stay strong.  I will stay focused. The idea is to distract and divert me from the campaign.  That is not going to happen.

Being at at the centre of a trollstorm during the season of goodwill has not been pleasant.  My mother and my sons have been very upset to see the abuse, lies and hate filled propaganda about me and my leadership of CLEAR posted on the internet.

These people aren’t engaged in campaigning for cannabis.  They’re pursuing their own selfish, jealous and truly pitiful agendas by attacking the success that CLEAR has achieved under my leadership.

The cannabis campaign has failed to make any progress over the last 10 years.  A lot of this is due to sheer incompetence and laziness.  When I was elected leader I discovered that literally nothing was being done by the LCA and any initiative that was proposed was shut down by the “co-ordinator” he that “does not want to lead and does not want to be led”.   The darker, subversive forces set out to fragment and cause conflict within the campaign and that suits their wallets very well indeed, thank you very much.

Most of all though it’s about tribalism.   This is what has held us back for so long.  The idea that if you’re in favour of cannabis being legally available then you must be on the left of politics, you must be anti-Thatcher and you must have at least three piercings – oh and you must not, under any circumstances, wear a tie – plus many other ridiculous prejudices.  These people think they’re cool and hip and smart but they’re not, they’re dumb, bigoted and prejudiced, just like a Daily Mail journalist only they’ve got a joint hanging off their lip.  Not so much Andy Capp, more Hopeless Hypocritical Hippy.

This is why so many were confused when back in Cardiff at the Million Marijuana march in May CLEAR launched the idea of “Hippies in suits”.  These politically incompetent and naive people don’t really want you to be able to smoke a joint if you wear a suit.  They are in fact as prejudiced and discriminatory as the attitudes they pretend to fight against. CLEAR welcomes members and supporters from all points on the political compass. We aim to be mainstream, not “alternative”.

All my life I have stood for liberty, truth and justice and against prejudice, discrimination and bigotry.  Unlike the trolls I am a strong believer in freedom of speech and expression.   However, the foul language that was posted on my and CLEAR’s Facebook page was horrifying. These are people who can’t express themselves without using disgusting swear words.  They are as much victims of the mendacious individuals behind this hate campaign as anyone.

To those who feel offended by my opinions. I don’t mean to cause offence so I am sorry if I have. That doesn’t mean that I retract them though! I am entitled to my opinion as is everyone else.

There are of course many more honourable and decent people who have been involved in the campaign in the past rather than those who work against it but it is this tired, destructive tribalism that has ruined their efforts.

So tomorrow Britain returns to work and so do I.  I shall not make any further comment on the dreadful events of the last few days and I advise all of you not to feed the trolls.  That is the only thing that gives them any power.  Ignore them.  I will fight tirelessly to end the prohibition of cannabis, most particularly for those who need it as medicine.

  1. As I said in the message I sent you on Facebook earlier today, I support you and the aims of CLEAR 100%. If there is anything I can do help you and CLEAR just let me know.
Don’t let the idiots get you down, there are plenty of us who agree with what you’re doing!

  2. What these saboteers are doing to you and the cause to end prohibition of cannabis is completely shameful in my opinion.

I really admire the work that you and the rest of CLEAR are doing to end the prohibition of cannabis.

I will be submitting a response to the home affairs select committee in the next few days. It would be good to see yours on the CLEAR website.

  5. I happen to know a lot of the people that you describe as trolls, I know them because I stood on the frontline with them one day, to stand up for cannabis and coffeeshops in the UK. I can understand they have problems with a guy who calls himself ‘Leader’ of a cannabis movement, you do not even smoke joints. You, sir, are not a cannabis activist, you are not even an activist, you are a major egotripper, and a wannabe politician, what good can come from you? You were describing the successes of Clear, well you have been successful in splitting the UK cannabis community in many fractions.

Good luck in showing what you are made of, oh Great Leader…

    • “You do not even smoke joints”

That pretty much sums up the accuracy and relevance of your abusive comment Nol. Ask anyone who knows me.

You’ve been duped Nol, cheated and lied to. The UK cannabis movement is stronger than it’s ever been. You’re listening to a very few, disgruntled idiots who made a total disaster of the campaign in the past.

I’m sorry you’ve been misled and that you’ve swallowed the propaganda. The truth will out. Keep watching and a very Happy New Year to you and yours.

  7. The rationale and the effort you put into a very worthy campaign is exemplary.
Peter I think you will always come up against malevolent forces on your journey.
They will test you, try to injure you, and attempt to steer you off coarse.
It is a testament, to your moral courage, and the success of your ability to cut through the propaganda,
lies, deceits and bad science, that they target you.

Maintain your position, you have a lot off support, Trolls will always be Trolls.

    • Thanks Stravage. Having just replied to John M. Jones, I feel very deeply what you say. To be accused of paranoia by a man who I believe to be sincere but who has been badly misled is very difficult. I exercise my best judgement (not for me because I will use cannabis as I wish whatever the law) but for those who NEED it as medicine. I believe this is a noble cause.

  8. Given the tone and content of the above diatribe, I wonder who will be the recipient of the next allegation?

It strikes me as somewhat bizarre that the leader of a “pro cannabis” organisation seems to think it fitting that he accuses others, with broadly the same intentions, of being involved with cannabis……… in a hugely negative way?

“the individuals behind this are big time growers and dealers who rely on prohibition to maintain the ludicrously high price of cannabis and fill their own greedy pockets.

They pretend to be pro-cannabis because they seek to subvert, disrupt and undermine the cannabis campaign.”

None of this makes any sense what so ever, and sounds very much like the rantings of somebody suffering from paranoia, advanced clinical paranoia.

Why on earth would “big time growers and dealers” waste their time, and risk being exposed, here, repeatedly?

However, I do wonder when Peter Reynolds will start naming people, which if he has the courage of his convictions, he surely will……. and I wonder how many of those he names will be the ones supporting him here, and elsewhere?

    John M. Jones

    January 2, 2012 at 8:22 pm

    • They don’t have “broadly the same intentions” though John. A few have exactly the opposite of my intentions and that is why they do what they do. A few more have the same intentions but only if you’re part of a tribal “alternative” culture. They are as bigoted and prejudiced as the prohibitionists.

In total they are a few plus a few. Very few.

You’ve been misled and I understand that. Paranoid? Well I could be, or I could be right. Let’s see shall we?

  10. I’ve seen a few of these posts of people trying drag down Mr Reynolds and would normally avoid responding to them. However I would like to say that regardless of whether or not you like Peter, you are both trying to achieve the same goal. There absolutely no point wasting your time making posts trying to disrupt the unity of the Clear.
If you have spare time I recommend you actively take part in the comment warriors campaign and submit written evidence to the home affairs committee’s drug policy review. We move no closer to resolving this issue by arguing amongst our selves. Clear is a single policy political group, if Mr Reynolds is only in this to become a real politician, he will be sorely disappointed for as soon as we win he won’t be sitting in parliament… he’ll be rolling a well deserved spliff for all his hard work.

  11. You make a lot of sense and it’s naive of anyone to think that divisive elements wouldn’t try to disrupt the cause. That being the case, I think it is also important for you to accept that people will distrust you. “What better way to destroy a movement that to get to the top of it?” is a reasonable thought (especially after a spliff or two). Managing this is a difficult job which relies on absolute transparency on your part and, though you have been attacked, transparency is not the same as defence. You’ve witten a very believable and well argued defence but real transparency is the only way you will be able to stop this kind of thing happening again. People know little about you other than what you have written about yourself (all positive) and what those who oppose you have written (all negative). Your Wikipedia page is just 385 words long and all the references are to things you have written. This is bound to lead to distrust in some which can be exploited by those with a disruptive agenda.

As CLEAR becomes more widely known and your cause progresses you will inevitably find yourself in the spotlight and then the press will start to dig into your past. Anything that can be known about you will be known and will most likely be reported in the most negative ways possible. I believe that if you take the bold step and reveal everything about yourself; especially that which you would prefer others didn’t know, then you’d put yourself in a very powerful position which would be hard to challenge in the future.

Excuse the pun, but be clear and you will create a clearing for something new to happen.

  12. I don’t know who these people are who attack you, Peter but, with what you have done over the past year, it seems that their position is threatened by cannabis becoming an issue, and with the prospect of an end to prohibition.

As you say, what changed over the past 10 years? The LCA seemed like a social club, with a lot of hot air and not much action. Cannabis cafes – good idea, but a good way for the authorities to clamp down harder. Legalise, regulate, educate, medicate, maybe should be rearranged to read EDUCATE, legalise, regulate, medicate.

You’ve got a lot of support here – keep up the good work!

  13. From what I have seen over the past several months of being a facebook friend with Peter, and also a follower of the CLEAR facebook page, is that Peter is focused on the message, and thats to end the prohibition on Cannibis. Some may agree or disagree with how they would like to see the law changed on who will be allowed to grow and distribute Cannibis; but the main thing is that atleast the issue of the unjust laws that people like us are up against is getting out into the public, and minds are changing (unless your name is varien ;)… I mean a Cannibis Roadshow, thats a fantastic thing to do and no doubt Peter was there doing his bit along with other members of CLEAR… If I wasn’t doing the single daddy thing 24/7 365 to 3 out of 4 of my children (2 under the age of 10) that I would be more active for CLEAR and would be quite happy with Peter Reynolds at the fore front of it doing his thing.

From my observations upto now, is that Peter aint one of these pompus up their own arse types of guys, what you see is what you get! and it takes (in my opinion) someone like that who gets things done, I sense a genuine man that has a clear message and someone who does try hard to meet the right people to move the Cannibis issue forward, lets face it, going into the belly of the beast and having that meeting with that liberal democrat guy, I forget his name, Ewan…… ? (excuse my forgetfulness I am a little tired 🙂 thats a step in the right direction in my eyes, added with the roadshow… all thats left to say is, Peter ? keep up the good work man and heres to 2012 😉

  15. Peter; as you know I work to further the aims of clear but not all of them, the issue over personal licences is not one I can support and have stated so. Some of your opinions are not shared by me and some of your blog comments seem inappropriate or at least easy to misunderstand. I would like you to name names over the drug dealer comments and the claims that some person does not even live here etc.

As for people not going away; since 1985 I have picked up several convictions without going away. One of possession 1/4 oz, production !00 plants, cultivation 6 plants, production 300 plants, production 47 plants, production with intent 30 plants, possession with intent 5 1/2 kilo the last two accepted as social supply to my partner of a medical preparation as complimentary treatment to my partners cancer treatment.

There are many people who do not go away a good defence commercial and industrial scientific and intellectual property arguments in interview and court go a long way, as does family commitments and a good lawyer, there are many reasons why many people do not go away and the reason we do not hear of it can be as simple as entering a basis of plea in the crown court meaning no full trial and no publicity.

I only know of one person who attacks you simply because he does not like you but accept some are pushing the boundaries of common sense in their attacks but you in your responses seem to be being antagonistic, this is also splitting the party as much as the efforts of these few people.

    Philip Walsh

    January 3, 2012 at 11:46 am

    • Phil, by definition not everyone in any party is going to agree with everything. We’d all like to see a situation where cannabis is treated the same as tomatoes but it isn’t going to happen. The CLEAR plan is a proposal designed to be constructive and move the issue on. It was agreed by the executive and included input from several other people. In retrospect, I wish you had been involved. I will make sure you are when we come to review it.

This article is a response to the disgusting attacks made on me. I did not seek conflict but I am going to defend myself. I just repeat the question, why would these very few individuals go to such extraordinary lengths to try and discredit me at a time when the campaign is achieving more success than ever?

I have said what I believe to be the truth and the truth that has prevented the campaign making any progress over many years and I stand by it.

  17. I’ve had to field a few comments posted here over the last day or so because of the quite disgusting language and abuse contained in them. This from people who accuse me of abuse in the most hysterical and rabid terms.

The bigotry of the politically correct is astonishing. Their thinking seems to be that no one should be allowed to express an opinion unless it conforms strictly to the very letter of their own view and anyone who doesn’t is a homophobe and a racist and a collection of vile swear words which must have exhausted their limited vocabulary.

The one that takes the biscuit though contained this advice:

I suggest that you speak to some relevant organisations who deal with BME or gay rights issues and ask them what they think if you want an independent view.

Yes, now, that would be an “independent” view wouldn’t it?

These hypocritical, politically correct fools aren’t just bigoted, they’re also lacking any sort of objectivity or insight into their own prejudice.

  20. Take heart Peter, I have been called wanker, Jew hater, and the latest an oath, I have always been committed in the search of ones autonomy. The attributes of the other is misleading as to what I am as far as I know of what I am, however maybe a sort of twisted strand within I enjoy reading put downs of myself, the fact that any one can find me worthy to comment upon, is that I am still thankful of being in the land of the living, nevertheless, serves some satisfaction of perversion of self identity, false or otherwise. Derision builds character.

  22. I’m glad I quit my facebook account.I could see no social advantages in sitting at home typing messages to friends and relatives as well as complete strangers. Also I had security issues with it and found the whole thing a little bit too narcissistic in my opinion.I have always been a private person and didn’t really care much for giving imaginary gifts, playing farmville or updating my mood status. To be crystal about it, I found the whole thing pretty boring.
What does this have to do with this particular situation?
NOT EVERYONE DOES FACEBOOK AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE F**K IS GOING ON!

I joined CLEAR because I was both a medical and recreational user of one of the most misunderstood and benevolent of psychoactive plants that this world has ever known.I wanted a change in the law that treats Cannabis users as nothing more than ignorant addicts trying to justify their habit. In short, I wanted a choice in which substance to put in my body in order to ease pain and intoxicate myself in the safest way possible.
So far to date the CLEAR campaign has made progress and seems to be getting the message across.
    Happy daze!(pun intended)

Now out of the blue there are accusations of racism and homophobia and slander on facebook.
From what I have read from your blog peter I must admit that you are a little full on about immigrants, although I admit that (and hope) you seem not to be racist if your best friend is black.Living in south London myself all my life, not far from your neck of the woods, I also occasionally felt that I was a minority, especially when in the African coffee shops I used to visit around the corner from my home. But then again that would be the case.I rarely ever felt uneasy.Mainly I found it quite fascinating. Many of my friends and work colleagues were from all over the place including Brazil, Algeria and Albania, to name just a few.
My opinion is that this country has always been and will always be multicultural. After all we are a small but important island just a hop across the channel from France. We have been a mixing pot for years and rightly so.Anyone who thinks they can trace their ancestry back to pure British white skin only is deluding themselves. If anyone in the world were to trace their past back far enough they may find that one of their ancestors was a Neanderthal who got it on with a Homo sapien in what is now called Milton Keynes!

The reason I’m telling you this Peter is that being the son of immigrant parents makes me a little suspect of who I give my support to.I believe that everyone has the right to live in the UK if they wish.We have the same rights ourselves and can move across Europe if we so choose.
Although I would like to know more about the situation and accusations which have occurred, I am not about to join facebook again to find out.

When, like myself, you are on the outside looking in on a muted and heated debate and don’t know the facts, it’s difficult to give anyone full support.
As the leader of CLEAR however I fully support you.You have done lot’s of hard work and achieved a fair amount in a short space of time.
This is, of course, on the understanding that if you do turn out to be a homophobic racist bigot, I will relinquish my membership of CLEAR.

I think we can all agree that this kind of internal politics gets the cause nowhere.

      January 7, 2012 at 2:32 pm

      • That’s good enough for me.

If any of your accusers can step up and prove differently then they should do so now or STFudgeU.
As for Sanj I sincerely hope, from the little I know of the situation, that this can be reconciled and he can be reinstated at the earliest possible time.
Unless my understanding is incorrect, it is not the done thing to go against the chain of command in any organisation if you have been explicitly asked not to by your superiors.Unless Sanj feels that there is a genuine and important reason, like illegality or democratic immorality or anything else, then he should tow the line and bite his tongue. As long as he is able to have his concerns noted, in case of any justification that may come to light in the future.
If the disagreement was concerning medical over recreational use, then my own opinion, for what it’s worth, would be to treat both equally.People with a medical need won’t be getting the medicine any quicker if the squabbling is over who deserves the use more.unless they move to Switzerland or Denmark etc. This is about the right to use Cannabis as a medicine and/or an intoxicant. We cannot deny the medical value of Cannabis any more than we can deny the recreational value, who’s primary use is that of a relaxant, which in itself could be classed as medical use, as a prophylactic.
However I must admit to being biased, as I am a medical and recreational user.

Thank you for your direct response.
I hope CLEAR will be able to move forward very soon from this temporary spanner in the works, whoever threw it in.

The authorities are smashing up grow ops the length and breadth of the nation and spending billions to keep the supply restricted and the price high. This breeds violence between dealer and resentment in the cannabis community. It makes it easer to catch people and ruin lives. They are the real reason for the price!

If people have no wish to pay silly money they can so no or grow their own, The cost of 1oz up to £350 the cost of being court growing it up to 14 years, supplying it up to 14 years, not to mention a career ruined, family terrorised, home smashed up, -property seized or council eviction, Until people accept responsibility for their own stupidity and we allow the anti drug crusade to go on; cannabis will remain at a stupid price because the career of a grower /suppler can be very short and very dangerous. We didn’t consider robbery or being battered for your crop.
I run a hydro-shop and seed company; my home and business has been raided 6 times since GW got the go ahead currently I am owed 80,000 pound in unpaid wages from the last 14 years of business. Some people work in the legal sharp end of cannabis, some in the sharp end of the illegal market. some take responsibility for their own stupidity and some grow their own! Others they sit about and bitch! when it all goes pear shape they grass up the people who take the risks and then use their own stupidity to justify doing it.
As for divide and rule I am beginning to wonder who wants this discussion and effort to be sidelined, a couple of pot heads, or bread heads earning a little for a while or big business, big pharma and the authorities!!!
Who’s man are you Peter? at the moment you don’t sound like mine!!

      • I’m no one’s and everyone’s Phil, including those who really need cannabis as medicine but don’t even know it. I’ve beggared myself with my time, my money, my career and my life for this cause. I know the beneficial power of cannabis and why we have lived in symbiosis with the plant since time began. I seek nothing but a modest life, only to drive this noble cause forward. I will continue to do that. I hold you in high respect.

      • I try to view you in the same light Peter; however your inability to represent us all and respect us all is testing.
Even dealers, the kids on bikes and the straight taxpayer is a victim of the law. the few unscrupulous individuals are just that ‘a few individuals’. I consider 99% of the dealers/growers/importers I have known and met as public servants; I give them my respect and love for keeping the flow going. fighting the good fight and risking all; so as you me and everyone else can sit at home and enjoy a spliff/bong/pipe, are they responsible for the plight of the medical y needy? No!

The war is not with them, it’s not with the hippies, the radicals the taxpayer or any other ‘victim’ it is with those that declared ‘war on some people who use some drugs’.’ war on the sick and needy’! Those who seek to monopolise medical cannabis and those earning a dishonest living by keeping it illegal! That is not Johnny dipstick with a bedroom full of weed, it’s Mr Respectable with a hidden agenda! Its the mythical or not so mythical ‘Man’
