Leaders We Can Believe In

I am intensely moved by Barack Obama and David Cameron taking the time to discuss Gary McKinnon’s case yesterday.  See here for the story.  Also by his mother Janis’ gratitude and gracious behaviour in response.  As she so eloquently put it,  these two men represent a new beginning in our world.  I am full of admiration for them both.

What Gary is alleged to have done was wrong.  He now needs to be tried by a British court.  If he is found guilty then the punishment must suit the crime taking into account his mental capability.

  3. Gary may have done wrong into hacking into the American computer system, but let’s not lose track of the fact that this happened at least 30 to 40 times a day during the early days of this century.
That’s across the American governments so called Intelligence services, plus the likes of NASA. Remember the Dutch hacker who changed the NASA logo on the space shuttle?
So what Gary did was nothing new, his difference was in leaving them a note saying “this is where your system problems are”. They’re prosecuting him for embarrassing them, they’ve never had decent I.T security system. In Jan 1990 3 hackers from Silicone Valley stole secrets on military exercises, flight orders and FBI investigations. March 1990 Dept of Energy only just stopped hackers from outside the USA from stealing secrets.
I wonder which technique Gary used, as most government systems are Unix, I wonder if he used the old VMS internal bugs or the Delpen program. There are others but they seemed favourite with many hackers back in the 1990’s.
I also wonder how the Americans dealt with the evidence of Gary breaking in. If they rebooted the system then they messed up evidence, as the reboot would have erased or scrambled some evidence. If they’d used the computer system after it had been hacked, and hadn’t taken proper I.T autopsy procedures then they’ve fouled the evidence, if not distorted the evidence themselves to blame someone else rather than look stupid for lousy security.
And as we all know the Americans hate being embarrassed and will invade countries to teach them a lesson.
